Chapter 20

Kayleigh

She could still feel him. The hard, lean lines of his body against hers. She could still feel the way his fingertips dug into her skin and how he tensed when she sat astride his hips. And his hands… how they felt trailing over her skin. His fingers had left scorching paths in their wake. His touch left her burning up until the early hours of the morning. Nothing sated her until her fingers were slick and her thighs were trembling – his name a quiet prayer on her lips.

The realization that she wanted him had hit her like a tidal wave. She had known when she watched him take the blade for her. When he focused on her and only her, she knew. When he seemed to care more about her well-being than his own, she knew. When he searched for her in the dark, when his heart broke in his throat because she lied, she knew.

The unacknowledged feelings that had been boiling inside of her since they met had reached a fever pitch.

When he had been escorted to the infirmary, and she was forced to wait alone, she realized that it felt wrong to be away from him. She hesitated to put a label on what she felt, knowing that the moment it was named, she would scare herself. From there, she would see no other choice but to run away. And she couldn’t do that for obvious reasons. And for some less so.

She had practically paced a hole in the floor, wondering how he was doing. If he needed anything. So, she went to him. And before she knew it, her lips were on his.

Her heart started to race when she remembered how he tasted. How his tongue felt against hers. How greedy he had felt when he held her. More than anything, she wanted him to lose that vice-like grip he had on his composure and have her right then and there.

But Ezra was good. Too good. He felt they couldn’t be together because of what she was. Because of the role he played in her life.

Guardian.

She knew it was unfair to lament the situation they were in. Not many people could claim to have a literal Guardian Angel looking over their shoulder to make sure they would be safe. But safety wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted him.

In what capacity, she didn’t know. At least, not yet. She had seen bits and pieces of those walls come down. But, from what she had seen, she was desperate to see more of him. To understand what made it so that he couldn’t smile without sadness alight in his eyes.

Without training to keep her mind occupied, she realized she had little else to do but walk the grounds. It was early in the morning. The chill had set in, and the grass was coated with dew. She hugged herself tightly around the middle as she paced through the gardens, her eyes locked on the skyline, waiting for the sun to peek up over the mountains.
